Elba Aleatico Passito wines are a prime example of Tuscany's stylistic diversity. This sweet red wine style is made from dried Aleatico grapes grown on the small island of Elba, just off the Tuscan coast. It was awarded its own DOCG classification in 2011.
Aleatico is an unusual red grape variety grown in small quantities in central Italy. It is used in the production of dry red and rosé wines, but is at its best as a dessert wine made in the passito manner where the grapes are air-dried prior to vinification.
Aleatico grapes are selected at harvest and during the natural drying in the sun. Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks and continues in wooden barrels for one or more seasons.
It is perfect to drink right away in little goblet glasses.
