Irpinia is an appellation in the Campania region of southern Italy. It lies in the northeast of Avellino province, in the lower reaches of the Apennine mountains. It gained DOC status in 2005.
Aglianico is a red wine grape variety native to southern Italy. It is known to produce full-bodied red wines that show musky berry flavors with firm tannins and good aging potential.
Production area is hillside vineyards in the municipalities of Luogosano, Sant’ Angelo all’Esca and Taurasi with altitude of 350 metres above sea level.
Soil type of vineyards is limestone clay with volcanic elements.
The grapes are picked by hand, with selection taking place first in the vineyard and then in the cellar.
After de-stemming, there is a pre-fermentation cold maceration, followed by alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature with maceration on the skins for about ten days.
The wine is aged for 24 months in concrete tanks with a further six months’ ageing in bottle before release.
